Lawanna Barron, ACSW, LCSW

Lawanna Barron has been employed by the Moody Air Force Base Family Advocacy Program since December 1993. She served as the Family Advocacy Treatment Manager from 1993-2000 and currently serves as the Family Advocacy Outreach Manager.

Ms. Barron graduated from Valdosta High School in 1985 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Valdosta State College in 1988. She received her Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Georgia in 1991.

Professional social work experience includes Chief Social Worker at the Medical College of Georgia Department of Pediatrics Children and Youth Project in Augusta, GA, and Social Worker with the Department of Veteran Affairs in Tuskegee, AL. Also, Ms. Barron has worked in private practice in Valdosta and for Park University as an Instructor teaching Sociology classes. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker through the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists. Also, she is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers.

In addition to working in the prevention of child and spouse abuse with military families at Moody AFB, Ms. Barron served as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Chief Counselor (collateral-duty) from January 2002 – May 2005 and currently serves as an EEO Counselor (collateral-duty).

Ms. Barron was named Moody AFB Civilian of the Year in 1994 and National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Georgia Chapter Social Worker of the Year in 2003. She has received numerous awards to include the Omega Psi Phi Business Person of the Year, Valdosta-Lowndes County Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award, and Woman of Achievement Award. Ms. Barron served two terms on the NASW National Board of Directors to include National Secretary from 2010-2013 and Region VI Representative for chapters in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi from 2005-2008. Also, she has served as the former President of the NASW Georgia Chapter. Ms. Barron was a trustee of the NASW Legal Defense Fund and remains actively involved with the South Georgia Unit.

Ms. Barron is an active member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church of Valdosta, Georgia. She is a charter member of Lambda Beta Chapter (Valdosta State University) and Kappa Psi Sigma Chapter (Valdosta, Georgia) of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Ms. Barron is also a member of the American Association of University Women and many other organizations. She volunteers throughout the community.
