Board Member
Wheeler currently serves as the Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs here at Iona College. Previous academic positions include Dean of the School of Social Welfare and Vice President for Public Engagement at the University at Albany SUNY; Dean of the School of Social Work Loyola University Chicago. He has held academic positions at Hunter College, Columbia University, and the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.
Dr. Wheeler served three terms on the NASW-National Board of Directors – Region II Representative (1999-2002); Vice President (2009-2012 and President (2014-2017).
His research, teaching, and community engagement work have demonstrated a deep understanding of the use of data and evidence in developing innovative programs and policy initiatives especially related to health with marginalized and oppressed groups.
Additional research interests include:
- Participatory methods to enhance community engagement and sustainability
- HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention resource-limited communities in the US
- HIV/AIDS Black and African American men who have sex with men
- Use of data and evidence in developing innovative programs and policy initiatives especially related to health with marginalized and oppressed groups
