GubadThe 157th session of the Council of public associations of the coalition meeting on “Enhancing transparency in the mining industry” took place.  The meeting was attended by 10 of the 11 members of the Council.

During the meeting, the draft declaration was discussed regarding the future activities of the Council, submitted by a member of this structure, the head of the Foundation for Promotion of entrepreneurship and free economy Sabit Bagirov.

The statement noted that the coalition will be true to the principles of civil society and would equally like to distance themselves from the government and the opposition.

The participants listened to the information of the co-founder of the Center for Economic Research Gubad Ibadoglu on the outcome of the meeting on 1-2 June in Oslo of the international board of “Transparency Initiative in the mining industry.” (EITI).

The Board has decided to assess a 15-member countries of EITI, including Azerbaijan.

In this regard,  the official mission of the International Secretariat of EITI will arrive in Baku  on  July 4-8.

The next board meeting will be held on  October 25-26 in Astana, and it will discuss the reports on the results of evaluation of the situation in the countries.

In April 2015, Azerbaijan’s EITI status was downgraded from structure-member country to a candidate country in connection with the pressure on the institutions of civil society. Also, the plan was adopted to improve  the situation. During the forthcoming visit, the mission of the international EITI Secretariat will discuss on July 7 with the Board of the NGO coalition question about the performance of the plan.

During the meeting took place the  elections of the Council of the coordinator. Candidates were nominated  by Ibadoglu and Bagirov. Ibadoglu was elected by the  majority of votes.
